BMW First Sport Car

BMW is the German multinational company which produces automobiles and motorcycles. Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) produced its first car in the year 1917 but until 1978, BMW had not produced its first sports car. The name of the first ever model of BMW's sports car is M1.

In the late 1970s, BMW had signed an agreement with Lamborghini to build a sufficient quantity of mid-engine sports cars for homologation. But, due to some conflicts, the agreement didn't work as per the plan. After all this, BMW has decided to manufacture the racing cars by itself.

Then, Bavarian Motors has manufactured first-ever sports car i.e., BMW M1.  BMW M1 was the first car to be built by BMW M alone. The BMW M1 had 3.5 Liter (3453 CC) displacement and six-cylinder engine with Kugelfischer & Bosch mechanical fuel injection and Magneti-Marelli ignition system. The fiberglass body of BMW M1 was manufactured by the Italian company, named Italiana Resina.

The top speed of BMW's M1 model was 164 mph (260 kmph). As it was BMW's first sports car, the interior of the car was not so attractive, luxury and comfortable. It had a half-leather and half-cloth interior. However, it had some other useful tools such as air-conditioning, stereo and power windows.

It had inline-6 engine with 277 hp at 6500 RPM, and the torque of 243 at 5000 RPM. With the powerful engine in the first car of BMW, it had the capacity to reach from 0 to 60 miles just in 6.5 seconds. And, it had the capacity to reach from 0 to 100 miles just in 13.3 seconds.

BMW had not produced its first sports car until the 1970s. First sign and then breaching of the contract agreement with Lamborghini made BMW produce the sports cars on its own. And, it resulted in the first-ever racing car of BMW M1.
